Storyline:
In 1171, a boy is supposedly stillborn, his mother dies at birth. A man comes into the hut and ventilates the newborn, which then begins to breathe independently. He hands over the child to the nurse, she should take care of the child, he will pick it up at times. If she gives it away, he will cut off her head. The man leaves and shortly afterwards another man comes into the hut. He takes the child from the woman. At first he suffocates it, but then he breathes it again and takes it with him. He hands the child over to Sigimund von Laurin, who wants to call the child Isenhart when his heart is made of iron and will survive the next winter. He has it raised by a blacksmith at Laurin Castle.
Fifteen years later, Isenhart learns to read and write together with Konrad von Laurin on behalf of Walther von Ascisberg in lessons with the monk Hieronymus, Walther himself teaches them science and martial arts. But a cruel crime against Isenhart’s lover, Anna von Laurin, ends his youth. Anna is murdered and her heart cut out. The perpetrator is apparently found immediately: dealer Alexander von Westheim. The merchant is executed, but still claims that Archbishop Wilbrand von Maulbronn is the murderer. Sigimund von Laurin then goes with his son Konrad and Isenhart to the monastery Maulbronn to learn from the bishop why the merchant had claimed this. A quarrel ensues between the bishop and Konrad, in the course of which Konrad slaps the bishop. The bishop then demands the extradition of Konrad, but his father resists. The bishop’s army moves to Laurin Castle, which is destroyed and Konrad’s parents are killed. Konrad escapes with his remaining sister Sophie, the maid Marie, monk Hieronymus and Isenhart. Walther von Ascisberg sends her near Spira.
Five years later, Isenhart and Konrad are employed as security guards in Spira and occasionally visit the farm of Konrad’s sister Sophie von Laurin and her maid Marie nearby. The two men are called to a barn where a young woman’s heart has also been cut out. Thus, the true serial killer is still on the road and Alexander von Westheim was wrongly executed. Together with Konrad, the medicus Günther von Martensen and his adlatus Henning von der Braake, Isenhart goes on the hunt for the serial killer. They suspect the red-haired and one-armed Michael of Bremen and follow him to his castle in Tarup. They find him there, there is a short duel and he flees deeper into his castle. There they find him hanged and assume suicide.
They ride back, past Sophie’s farm to Ascisberg Castle to report to Walther. They find out that Michael von Bremen cannot be the murderer. Isenhart also learns that his biological father is Sydal von Friedberg, who also murdered earlier and took the hearts of the dead after returning from Toledo. But Sydal is dead. Walther, Sydal and Michael fought together at the Battle of Dorylaeum and therefore knew each other.
Isenhart and Konrad ride to Toledo, where they learn that Sydal von Friedberg discussed the seat and immortality of the human soul together with an Arab medicus and that the murderer continues to murder in Sydal’s footsteps and wants to bring his work to completion. Sydal is still alive, but he has renounced murder. In Toledo they also meet Wilbrand von Maulbronn. Konrad seriously injures the bishop and escapes with Isenhart.
Both ride back to Ascisberg Castle and learn that Walther has died and that he has made Isenhart his heir. In Spira there was another murder: a young monk whose heart was also cut out. Isenhart and Konrad ride to Spira and visit Sophie again on her farm. Father Jerome is dying. Isenhart discovers that Michael of Bremen could not have committed suicide, as he could not have tied the cross knot on his neck with one hand. The suspicion falls for Isenhart on Günther von Martensen. In Spira, Isenhart learns that Günther von Martensen has gone seriously ill with his Adlatus to the leprosy cave in Maulbronn. There he meets Henning, who shows him a kind of experimental device with which one should see the escape of the soul from the dying body. The dying lie on a stretcher and are weighed. Exactly at the time of death, people always become 45 g lighter, the soul has escaped. Isenhart learns that Günther met Sydal in Toledo and was enthusiastic about his idea of seeking the soul in pure hearts. Günther continued the murders and Henning helped him. Henning and his assistant are able to overwhelm Isenhart and Konrad, who has arrived in the meantime, and flee through a corridor. Isenhart and Konrad follow him, the corridor leads into the monastery. There they are captured. Wilbrand von Maulbronn is alive and he wants to present Isenhart and Konrad to Cardinal Ernst von Regensburg for sentencing the next day. At night, Isenhart is able to free himself from his dungeon. It comes to a fight between Isenhart and Henning and Isenhart learns that Henning is his half-brother. Meanwhile, the cardinal reaches the monastery, and Isenhart and Konrad can blame the bishop. The cardinal lets the judgment of God decide. In the final fight, Isenhart shoots the bishop with a crossbow and kills Henning.
Isenhart and Sophie become a couple, he “has arrived”.
